Vision

At St Martin’s, PE will be fun, engaging and will inspire all pupils to lead physically active lives. We aim to maximise the development of every child’s ability and achievement in the area of PE, enabling them to know more about physical activity and how it is a key component of a healthy lifestyle. Our children will have a desire to succeed and will be fair sports people.

We aim to provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way that supports their health and fitness, whilst boosting self-confidence, self-esteem and supporting the development of social skills, encouraging all children to become successful, lifelong learners.

We are aware that research has shown a direct link between children’s physical and mental health and therefore we aim to provide experiences that will inspire pupils to develop physically which will support their mental wellbeing.

Rationale

Physical activity not only improves health, reduces stress and improves concentration, but also promotes correct physical growth and development. Exercise has a positive influence on academic achievement, emotional stability and interaction with others. At St Martin’s C of E Primary School, we believe that the physical development we provide through the teaching of PE forms an essential foundation for the growth of the whole child. The range of physical activities includes athletics, dance, team games, gymnastics and swimming. As well as academic learning, pupils will be provided with the opportunity to develop their personal and social skills by promoting character building, cooperation, teamwork and self-esteem. To further promote these qualities, children in upper KS2 are trained as ‘play leaders’; this approach allows children to encourage others to take part in activities during break and lunch times.
